New Jersey Civic Engagement Intern

The Civic Engagement Intern will play a key role in expanding voter registration, voter education, and civic participation among Korean Americans in Northern New Jersey. The intern will work closely with staff to organize voter registration drives, assist community members in the voter registration process, and engage the community through outreach events. This is a hands-on position ideal for someone passionate about civic engagement, democracy, and working with immigrant communities.

Organization History & Mission

The MinKwon Center for Community Action was established in 1984 to meet the needs and concerns of the Korean American community. Since our founding, we have made a profound presence through various grassroots organizing, education, and advocacy initiatives that address important community issues, including immigration policies at the national, state and city levels, voter rights, and cultural awareness. The MinKwon Center places a special emphasis on meeting the needs of our marginalized community members, including youth, elderly, recent immigrants, low-income residents, and limited-English-proficient residents.

Internship Responsibilities
  • Assist in planning, organizing, and staffing voter registration drives at community locations, including H Mart, cultural events, universities, and community centers.

  • Provide in-language (Korean/English) assistance to community members in filling out voter registration forms and answering basic questions about voting in New Jersey.

  • Support educational workshops and events that inform community members about their voting rights and the election process.

  • Track and input outreach data into MinKwon’s database to measure engagement impact.

  • Assist in creating bilingual outreach materials (flyers, social media posts, handouts).

  • Support other New Jersey civic engagement and community programs as needed.

Requirements
  • Strong interest in civic engagement, voter rights, and immigrant community empowerment.

  • Bilingual proficiency in Korean and English is strongly preferred.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, especially with community members of diverse backgrounds.

  • Comfortable with in-person outreach and fieldwork.

  • Organized, reliable, and able to work independently and in a team setting.

  • Previous experience with voter registration, canvassing, or community organizing is a plus but not required.
